Malayan High School of Science (MHSS), at its young age, has already claimed the reputation of being one of the country’s providers of strong basic learning foundations in Science and Technology and Mathematics. This has been proven by its string of major achievements from different academic events such as Science and Mathematics quiz bees and robotics competition held in the country and by its high passing rates in several proficiency and college entrance examinations.
This reputation has been further strengthened by the results of this year’s National Career Assessment Examination (NCAE) and National Achievement Test (NAT), which show that MHSS is one of the top-performing schools in the region.
According to the results recently released by the Department of Education (DepEd), in the NCAE, which annually tests the general scholastic aptitude, technical-vocational skill, entrepreneurial skill, logical reasoning, and non-verbal ability of all fourth year high school students in the Philippines to help them choose the right courses in college, MHSS students ranked 6th overall with an average standard score of 682 – accounting only for the figures in the subject areas its curriculum focuses on – among 121 privately owned and public high schools in the division of Manila.
Among the areas in which they were tested, Malayans exhibited high proficiency in Scientific Ability, ranking 3rd with an average standard score of 642.74. They also scored high in the area of Mathematical Ability with an average standard score of 663.22, ranking 4th among schools. MHSS also did well in the remaining areas of Reading Comprehension and Verbal Ability, wherein it ranked 9th and 10th, respectively.
In the NAT, MHSS again proved its strength in the subject area of Science by having a mean percentage score of 47.54, which puts it in the top 5 schools for Science and Technology in the district.
MHSS, led by its principal Dr. Efren B. Mateo, takes pride in its students’ latest notable accomplishment, giving all the credit to its stakeholders.
“This achievement of our students is a collaborative endeavor of our teachers, the administration, and, of course, the students and their parents,” said Dr. Mateo.
Dr. Mateo stresses that MHSS never rests on its laurels but encourages its faculty to constantly seek improvement in their methods of instruction, as this will determine their students’ learning success.
“I always emphasize to our teachers that they should set high standards and expectations for their students. They should start working on the level where the students are and lift them up to the level they are expected to reach. It is for this reason that teachers are sent to seminar-workshops so that they are updated with the latest pedagogical trends.This paradigm is closely monitored among the teachers in terms of the activities and periodic tests they give their students and the classroom discourses they plan, develop, and implement.”
Dr. Mateo also ensures that they support their move of continuous instruction improvement by supplying cutting-edge facilities and resources to aid in students’ learning. Apart from this, he also enjoins parents in the total development of the students by informing them how they can contribute in their children’s studies during general assemblies.
