MHSS athlete wins silver, bronze in NCAA swimming finals

Malayan High School of Science (MHSS) adds yet another to its list of achievements after its swimming athlete Ken Gil Romero took home two medals from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) finals last August 20-22 at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.

Fourth year student Ken won the silver for the 50-meter backstroke event and the bronze for the 100-meter backstroke.

“NCAA is a major annual event. I am very happy that I am able to bring honor to my family and school,” enthused Ken.

It was the second time for Ken to win in the tournament. In 2013, he first won the bronze for the 100-meter backstroke. With his dedication and preparations, he was confident that he would perform better in this year’s NCAA.

“Without neglecting my studies, I made sure to train six days in a week. With that, I knew I had a bigger chance to win in the NCAA again,” he said.

Coming from a family of swimmers, Ken has his older brother Karl Gil Romero, an alumnus of MHSS, as one of his biggest inspirations in swimming. Like him, his brother had won several times in the NCAA.

“For me, he’s better, stronger, and has more determination to win. As an athlete, I have always looked up to him,” he said.

A swimmer since age 3, Ken has already won numerous national competitions, such as the Milo Little Olympics and the Palarong Pambansa.
