MHSS tops Letran’s 5th Inter-school Digital Arts Competition

Malayan High School of Science second year student Ysabelle Shivers was declared the Grand Champion of the fifth Inter-school Digital Arts Competition organized by and held at Colegio de San Juan de Letran last November 28.

A second year student from Malayan High School of Science (MHSS) was declared the Grand Champion of the fifth Inter-school Digital Arts Competition organized by and held at Colegio de San Juan de Letran last November 28, beating participants from the host school, who placed second and third, respectively.

Ysabelle Shivers, along with two other MHSS students, was chosen to represent the school in the newly opened high school division of the competition.

Working with this year’s theme “Letran Nation: UKnighted for Life,” participants had to design posters using plain Adobe Photoshop CS3, without additional plug-ins or fonts, and make use of only eight images provided by the organizers as materials.

Shivers believed that simplicity made her work stand out among the rest. She opted to avoid making major changes in the presentation of the images and just simply maximized the use of color tints.

For the past four years, the Inter-school Digital Arts Competition was only open to colleges and universities in Metro Manila that specialize in Information Technology. This year, however, the host decided to tap a younger audience to spark their interest in digital arts.

“I’m very grateful to MHSS for allowing us to participate in this competition. They’ve been very supportive of their students who are into digital arts. Traditional arts will always be there, but I hope digital arts gets equal attention because it’s an advancement that we have to embrace,” Shivers said.

Patrick Ilog, MHSS’ Information and Communications Technology (ICT) professor and Shivers’ coach, further explained that MHSS continuously exposes its students to such competitions to develop their appreciation of the most important technologies of today.

“Participating in different inter-school competitions related to the field of science and technology fulfills the vision and mission of our institution. We want our students to have a strong foundation in the natural sciences but still allow them to express their artistic abilities. This win was able to prove that we have the capability to reach the top. Hopefully, this would encourage others to join similar competitions,” he said.
