MHSS Holds General Assembly Of Parents And Teachers

Every year, Malayan High School of Science convenes parents and teachers primarily to establish camaraderie and foster harmonious relationships. Everyone recognizes the fact that the well-being of the children, in general, and their academic performance, in particular, is a collaborative endeavor between and among the parents, teachers, administrators and support staff and, of course, the students themselves.

Last July 4, 2009, the general assembly for the School Year 2009-2010 was held at the school gymnasium. The half-day affair started with an opening program where the outgoing Parents Council President, Mr. Leonardo Macalino, reported about the accomplishments and projects of the organization. He mentioned that during his administration, the parents donated trash bins, chairs fixed near the canteen, and bleachers for the gym. Dr. Reynaldo B. Vea, President of MHSS gave an inspirational message. He introduced the new Principal, Dr. Efren B. Mateo and told the group that Dr. Leonila Reyes, former high school Principal, is still connected with the school as a curriculum consultant. He proudly announced some outstanding accomplishments of the school such as obtaining a rank of 11 out of 82 private schools in the Division of the City of Manila during the 2008-2009 National Achievement Test. During the intermission number, Merlin Mendoza, a freshman Darwin, awed the audience with his violin rendition of Canon on D by Johann Pachelbel. Finally, Dr. Efren B. Mateo introduced the teachers and staff. With the addition of the fourth year level, the school hired 8 additional teachers to complete the pool of 15 fulltime teachers and 9 parttime teachers. Together with the officers, staff and general and security services, MHSS now operates with a total of 45 dedicated and committed personnel.

The first part of the program ended with an open forum where the parents made queries and comments about some practices they observed and suggested ways to improve them. The questions were satisfactorily answered by the concerned school officials and teachers and the suggestions were positively considered.

After the open forum, the election of year level officers and officers of the Parents Council was conducted. Elected officers of the Parents Council were: Mrs. Donna Miranda – President, Mr. Manuel Chuaunsu – Vice President, Mrs. Marissa D.V. Reyno – Secretary, Mrs. Gina Pascual – Treasurer, Mrs. Therese Cortes – Asst. Treasurer and Mrs. Christine Patron – Auditor. The complete set of MHSS Parents Council Officers is presented below.
