The Supreme Student Government (SSG) of Malayan High School of Science (MHSS) launched the Box of Hope Project, aiming to readily mobilize the school to extend help in times of calamities. SSG president Nina Duque says the project is about making help and assistance instantly available to people in dire situations.

“The geographic location of our country makes it very much prone to natural hazards like earthquakes and typhoons. Apart from this, climate change has made the Philippine weather disturbances more frequent and more devastating,” said Duque.

Through this project, the MHSS faculty and student body will continuously accept in kind donations that can be stored for not longer than a year’s time such as old clothes, canned goods, medicines, books, and toys, which will be repacked and readied for distribution in times of disasters. The distribution of the relief goods will be coordinated by the SSG with officials of barangay recipients and possible partner non-government organizations.

Members of the SSG will be in charge of the proper storage of the donated items as well as the constant and close monitoring of their quality while in storage.

“The Box of Hope Project will make donating easier for us, as, with the continuous collection, relief goods will be readily available even before any calamity takes place,” added Duque. “Anybody can donate anytime to the Box of Hope Project.”

She further said that surplus of donations by the end of the year will be distributed in the school’s annual outreach activities in December.

Embodying the core value of Responsibility, MHSS has been engaging its students in outreach activities, reaching less fortunate members of different communities in the metro.

Last year, the SSG partnered with Rotaract Club of Manila Metro (RAC-MM) to organize and conduct a relief operation in Pasig. A total of 155 relief bags were distributed to the residents of Pinagbuhatan.

“Helping people who are in need is enveloped in the school’s core value of Responsibility. We are thankful that the students are imbibing the values that are being taught to them and that this translates into positive actions such as the Box of Hope Project,” commented Dr. Efren B. Mateo, MHSS principal.

Apart from relief operations, the school also organizes outreach programs like the institutional outreach of the school to students of Justo Lukban Elementary School and to the children of “Pamayanan,” a nearby community, in 2011 and 2012, respectively.

Those who would like to donate may deposit their donations in boxes located around the MHSS campus. Donors may also visit the MHSS SSG’s Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/malayanscience.ssg for inquiries.
