MHSS holds 1st Balagtasan contest among Grades 5, 6 students

Friday, August 26, 2011

Elementary students from 3 different schools slugged it out in the balagtasan (poetic joust) contest, dubbed “Tanglaw Bukas: Malayampatimpalak,”  organized by the Malayan High School of Science (MHSS) on August 19 at the school’s Audio Visual Room.

As the country celebrates “Buwan ng Wika” this whole month, MHSS invited Grades 5 and 6 students from Chiang Kai Shek College, Santa Isabel College and Don Bosco Technical Institute Makati to battle in 3 different categories, namely Balagtasan, Daglian Talumpati and Paskilang Haiku at Tanaga.

The representatives from Chiang Kai Shek were Chelsy Jessamae Ng, Alliah Rae Plaza and Gabriel Nicolas Minamedez (Balagtasan); and Ericka Chan and Jefferson Chua (Paskilang Haiku at Tanaga).

Santa Isabel College was represented by Alia Shaina Sinaguinan, Mary Lourdes Aceveda and Riza Francheska Regala (Balagtasan); Dianne Kathryn Dural and Beatrice Arive (Dagliang Talumpati); and Maria Alysha Nicole del Rosario and Marinelle Completo.

Adrian Justin Gache and Ceth Joshua De Guzman (Dagliang Talumpati); and Felipe Reblora III and Brian Karlo Agoncillo (Paskilang Haiku at Tanaga) represented Don Bosco.

The event was MHSS’ 1st balagtasan contest involving elementary students from different schools and this year’s theme was “Wikang Filipino, Wikang Panlahat, Ilaw at Lakas sa Tuwid na Landas.”

Ferdinand Geronimo of the MHSS’ Registrar’s Office said the program aimed to promote further the use of the Filipino language among the students as well as improve their communication skills using the national language.

“We would like to develop the use of Filipino language among the youth. We want to [provide] a venue for such competition,” Geronimo said.

MHSS principal Dr. Efren Mateo, on the other hand, echoed Geronimo’s remarks.

“[Ang programang ito ay para] mapaunlad at mapayabong ang wikang pambansa upang tayo ay magkaintindihan at upang makamtan natin ang pag-unlad at kapayapaan,” Mateo said.

The competition started with a prayer and singing of the national anthem led by the school’s choir, Musikamalayan.  The MHSS dance group, Kamalayan, wowed the audience, composed mainly of students and teachers, with its production number while the judges deliberated on the results.

Mateo, Geronimo, Marvin Salazar, executive assistant to the President-Mapua, and Gerlyn  Francisco, MAPEH Teacher-MHSS, comprised the panel of judges.

Winners

Under the Balagtasan category, the team from Santa Isabel grabbed the top place followed by Chiang Kai Shek.

Two students from Chiang Kai Shek landed in the first 2 top slots in the Paskilang Haiku at Tanaga. Chua and Chan placed first and 2nd, respectively, while Reblora from Don Bosco placed 3rd.

In Dagliang Talumpati, the winners were De Guzman from Don Bosco (1st), Gache from Don Bosco (2nd) and Dural from Santa Isabel (3rd).

MHSS will start holding balagtasan competitions yearly, with more elementary schools, including public schools, expected to participate in the event.
